A beachfront event space that offers a quintessential ‘sand between the toes’ Gold Coast experience has taken out the city’s most prestigious urban design award.
The Gold Coast Urban Design Awards 2020, funded by City of Gold Coast, celebrate the best of the city’s built environment in terms of design, liveability and sustainability.
Kurrawa Terrace Event Space, submitted by Palm Beach-based 8la Architects, took out the Excellence in Urban Design Award in a virtual ceremony today.
Kurrawa Terrace is the Gold Coast’s first absolute beachfront site dedicated to unique outdoor functions and tourism events.
It integrates an event space with the beach to create a ‘sand between the toes’ Gold Coast experience for visitors and locals.
“The Kurrawa Terrace Event Space is a masterful example of elegant design set within a complex context,” the judging panel noted.
“For a small project it illustrates the transformative power of the very best interventions and presents as a model for future projects of this type.”
The Urban Design Leadership Award went to Amy Degenhart who heads up architecture and urban design practice degenhartSHEDD, as well as delivering innovative and affordable housing concepts under the Urban Pure and Bubbl Up brands.
The judges described Ms Degenhart as a tireless advocate for the “missing middle” and a leader in the development industry.
“Through her projects, Amy questions and challenges any long accepted planning controls, engineering standards and traditional development typologies that are impediments to good Urban Design outcomes,” the judges noted.
ENVI Micro Urban Village in Southport, submitted by Bubbl Up and degenhartSHEDD, won the Urban Design Award for best private project.
The pioneering development turned one standard house into 10 architecturally designed micro-lot homes, seven of which were purchased by first home buyers.
The Spit Master Plan, submitted by Deicke Richards, was named best unbuilt project while
The Residence multipurpose commercial building in Southport, by CoSpaces and Space Cubed, won the Adaptive Reuse Project category.
