Many Tenants Battle Pandemic Without Rent Relief, Suggests Poll- realestate.com.au

Many renters have struggled to keep a roof over their heads during the coronavirus pandemic, with a new survey revealing most Australians hit by job cuts have not been offered rental relief.

A recent national poll, commissioned by tenancy advocate, Better Renting, showed just 9{d872b83874cbc456d4e7e49f0ae218a6abf1c172c201c18bd21e1a6839859f06} of renters who lost income received a satisfactory reduction in their rent during COVID-19.

The survey of nearly 1000 people showed that almost two thirds of tenants lost some or all household income due to the coronavirus crisis, but only half actually requested a rent reduction.

Buying habits: the new areas property investors are targeting due to COVID-19

Property in regional locations such as Wagga Wagga are becoming more popular.


COVID-19 has encouraged property investors to cast a wider net in their search for deals and a third are seeking properties more than 200km from where they live.

Investors are also increasingly shunning their home suburbs, with only 6.9 per cent buying property in the streets near where they lived, according to an MCG Quantity Surveyors study.

The research analysed the details of 1000 investors who commissioned depreciation reports in the year to May 2020 to get a picture of their buying habits.

HomeBuilder extended in Victoria due to stage four lockdown

The good news for homebuyers is also good news for builders.


Victorians hoping to cash in on the $25,000 HomeBuilder grants from the federal government have been given an extension.

Initial plans for the scheme required those claiming the cash to commence construction within three months of signing a contract.

In light of stage four COVID-19 restrictions the Commissioner of State Revenue has extended that timeline to six months.
