A GORGEOUS historic home on a wealth of land at Kingston and a heritage charmer with a stunning renovation at Sandy Bay are among the Tassie homes that house hunters could not get enough of this year.
They were just two of the state’s Top 10 most popular properties of 2020 — the listings with the most views on realestate.com.au between January and mid-November.
But it’s not just our most expensive homes that topped the charts, a comparatively cheap fixer-upper also cracked the most viewed properties chart.
The No. 1 one property, Huntingfield House, recorded a jaw dropping 83,313 views on the property website.
For perspective, the most viewed home of the week in Tasmania might drum up a few thousand views. Last week’s top property, an exceptional home at Legana, raked in 7000-plus while being one of the most viewed homes in the nation.
Craig Patterson from Craig Patterson Real Estate said the 2ha Kingston property has been under contract for months and that it had been sold subject to a development approval.
The historic home — three levels and a loft — took years to construct, with the work starting in the 1820s.
Prior to its recent sale, the vendors had lived here for about 20 years and had invested plenty of resources towards restoring and preserving the home.
The home’s owner said: “We have been lucky to have exceptional artisan craftsmen completing the restoration work.
“It has been an absolute privilege to live here. It has been an exceptional experience. We have learnt so much — it has been wonderful.”
The second most viewed home, No. 112 King Street in Sandy Bay, is a perfect example of the type of property that folks dream of owning in this premium location.
It offers the charm and character of the 1910s effortlessly fused with an awesome architectural addition at the rear.
It is all about the Federation era grandeur meeting modern elegance in this Sandy Bay stunner.
St Andrews Estate Agents director Steve Yannarakis described it as “quite frankly, pretty grand”.
“By not trying to make a big statement, it ends up making a statement nonetheless,” Steve said.
It offers a really nice blend of solid, spacious, character home with all of the whiz bang modern luxuries, the open-plan living and the beautiful bathrooms — every element of the renovation was completed to a high level.”
Rubbing shoulders with its multimillion dollar contemporaries, No. 17 William Street in West Hobart was the year’s fifth most viewed home.
As soon as the home — a 1900s weatherboard cottage in need of some TLC — hit the market it caused a stir with potential buyers.
Property representative Brad Stephens from Devine Property showed over 100 groups through the property ultimately selling it at auction for $435,000.
Brad said it was purchased by first-home buyers who want to restore it.
