Ask anyone who lives in St Peters and – aside from the picturesque tree-lined streets and fantastic mix of modern and classic architecture – they’ll tell you one of its strongest attributes is its central location.
That’s certainly what Michael and Paula Vidale have found. They’re now selling the Harrow Rd property they’ve called home since 2008, and say they’ll miss the house and area immensely.
“It’s a great house – our children were five and seven when we bought it and they’re now 19 and 21 respectively,” Mr Vidale said.
“My son Jordan went to St Peter’s and he could walk 150m to school, and it was close to everything – close to Norwood, close to all our friends and we could walk into town. Mia, our daughter, went to Loreto and the bus stop was at our front gate. We used to ride regularly and Linear Park’s just at the end of Harrow Rd. It was a great lifestyle. We really enjoyed it. We’ve since moved to Gilberton and we bought that block in 2007 and planned to just be in St Peters for a few years while we built, but we’ve ended up staying there for almost 13 years, and that’s testament to the fact that we loved it so much. “For a family of four it was great we’ll miss it – the neighbours are fantastic and it’s a pretty street. We actually tried to build our Gilberton house in St Peters – we tried everything – but they wouldn’t let us build a two storey house. We would have loved to have stayed there, to be honest, because it’s just so close to everything.”
Mr Vidale said the decision to buy a new home over an older property was easy.
“We fell in love with it,” he says. “It was pretty. We were looking for a villa in St Peters, and villas are lovely but old houses have there issues, but this was brand new, it was easy and it was an easy decision to make. Rather than going and renovating an old house while the kids were little, we thought this would be perfect. It’s great quality too – it’s stood the test of two very active young children – one of whom is sports mad.”
The home offers three levels of luxury living space. The ground floor is the heart of the home and houses three bedrooms – including the luxurious master suite, complete with dual built-in robes, a walk-in robe and a stunning ensuite with a separate bath and shower. A family bathroom is also on this floor, as is a laundry.
The heart of the home is the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area at the rear, opening via three sets of french doors to a terrace area at the back. A retreat with a kitchenette and bathroom sits on the first floor, adjacent the fourth bedroom, and the home also has a 4m x 4m underground cellar. Carports sit at both the side and rear of the home, and the property features low-maintenance front and rear yards.
Mr Vidale says the home is a fantastic entertainer, with his property becoming the go-to venue for social gatherings and family events.
“We’re the privileged ones – we get to do all the entertaining and all the cleaning up after,” he says. “There’s one in every family, isn’t there. We’ve hosted a lot of Christmases and birthdays for up to 40 people and it was easy. It’s great – you can open all the doors out onto the back patio and open it up to the big backyard.”
“The house is beautiful, but the suburb is incredible. I think a lot of people underplay St Peters. It’s just so convenient. My office is in Grenfell St and it was literally a five-minute trip to work, we had friends in North Adelaide and everything is literally five minutes away. When you’ve lived there you really realise just how amazing it is.”
Mr Vidale says the couple will miss the property and the suburb immensely, and say the home’s versatile layout would make it ideal for a range of buyers.
“For a couple with a young family it would be ideal, but then again it would be perfect for a couple of downsizers,” he says.
“It was great for the kids, and for quite a large house it’s a very low-maintenance property – whoever lives here will love it. We’re certainly going to miss it a lot. It’s been a huge part of our lives and one we’ve all enjoyed a lot.”
